Celebrating Connection at the First Centre for Systemic Studies Student Conference

Updated: 6 days ago

On Friday, 21st June 2024, we gathered at Pontypridd Museum for the inaugural Centre for Systemic Studies (CSS) Dysgu Student Conference. This day of connection and exploration marked a significant milestone in our journey, celebrating the vibrant community we've cultivated since our establishment. And, in other ways it was also a continuation of the many successful Annual Student conferences that have been hosted by The Family Institute over the years.

A Legacy of Connection

Founded in 2020 by Leah Salter and Billy Hardy, the CSS (a not-for-profit Community Interest Company) continues the 50-year legacy of the Family Institute as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to systemic practice and learning across Wales, and beyond. The core training in Family Therapy—including Foundation, Intermediate, and Supervision levels—have been continued since 2020, and we are very close to setting up The

Qualifying level of training - with the plan of being ready for Spring 2025.

A Sense of Community

During the conference in June, we had two key note speaks- Kieran Vivian-Byrne who shared his passion for poetry and his engaging insights on the theme of "thresholds". Our second key-note Andre van Wyk shared his passion for storywork and his experiences

of systemic community engagement, through story. Attendees

from across all the current courses shared their experiences of learning and practice, with exciting workshops facilitated by the Intermediate and Supervisor course current students, highlighting the strong sense of community we create together.

Many expressed how the courses feel like a family, where every voice is heard and valued. This supportive environment enriches our learning and deepens

practice development.

Voices from the Day

For those who couldn’t attend as well as those who did, we invite you to listen to our audio podcast, featuring reflections from students on their experiences at the conference. Their insights beautifully capture the essence of learning as community.

Additionally, don’t miss the Stories Untold music video, which documents the Voices From the Market project referenced in the podcast, showcasing the power of storytelling and engagement.

Looking Ahead

We remain committed to nurturing an evolving systemic community. Stay tuned for more updates on our continuing professional development (CPD) events, designed to enhance our practice and connections.

Thank you to everyone who made the first CSS Student Conference such a success. Together, we’re continuing to nurture the core value of learning as social activity.

Listen to what students think...
