Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 Intermediate Course in

Family Therapy and Systemic Practice

(Year 2)

Entry requirements

At Intermediate levels applicants are required to study at level 7 (post graduate level) have a core profession (or equivalent- see below). They are required to have the opportunity to apply systemic ideas to practice totalling 60 hours in a current work setting (or placement) with satisfactory arrangements for the supervision of practice (10 hours of systemic supervision) under the AFT Code of Ethics and Practice. Applicants need to make their own arrangements for practice and supervision hours.

You may only apply for registration as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist after successful completion of the full four years of training (Foundation, Intermediate and Qualifying levels).

Prior learning

The Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice advocate for a relevant professional training in a mental health related discipline, social care or equivalent in order to undertake Family Therapy/ Systemic Psychotherapy training. Applicants are also expected to have a degree in a relevant subject/ study at post graduate standards. AFT require courses to have an equivalence procedure in order to assess individuals who may fall out of that remit.

At The Centre for Systemic Studies we believe that individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences contribute significantly to the development of the field and contribute meaningfully to enhancing inclusivity. Our policy is that those individuals without prior "core" training but with relevant other training and/ or experience can apply to all levels of training as long as equivalence can be demonstrated at application. You may wish to arrange a phone call with one of the Directors or Course Leads to discuss this.

Applicants need to be aware that whilst having an alternative background to a core profession will not prevent registration (if you successfully complete the 4 years) you may experience some barriers to employment as some employers do insist on a core profession and/or other registration (e.g. nursing, social work, counselling).

If applicants wish to demonstrate prior learning as part of an APEL route then clear evidence of equivalence is required. At Foundation level this would be in the form of evidencing level 6 learning. At Intermediate level if applicants have not previously undertaken a Foundation course in Family Therapy then they need to evidence a minimum of 12 days of systemic training with a suitably qualified and experienced trainer; as well as level 6 learning. They will be asked to produce a reflective piece of writing (1000 words) to accompany their application.

Interested in our Supervision Level training?
If there’s enough demand, we’ll launch in Autumn 2025—otherwise, it’s set for a 2026 intake.
