Routes to Training

The AFT (Association of Family Therapy) website has details about training requirements for Family Therapy in the UK.

You can find them on aft.org.uk.

Family Therapy training is a four-year part-time Masters or Masters equivalent professional training in the UK but taught through 3 separate courses. There is an expectation that applicants will have a core profession and first degree prior to embarking on year one (Foundation). APEL (prior learning) routes are possible and evidence will be required. A first degree is also usually required. And experience in a relevant field. And the ability (from year 2) to be in practice in a relevant context (where you can see families) and have Systemic supervision.

You will see more information on this on the AFT website and the "blue book" (training standards) also accessible on the AFT website.

All of the courses across differing training providers will be designed to meet the training standards of AFT and the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy, UKCP, which is the registering body for Systemic Psychotherapy. Our courses at CSS adhere to this.

AFT accredits family and systemic training courses delivered by independent training providers and those with University partners.

The four year training programme has three stages – Foundation (year 1), Intermediate (year 2) and Qualifying (year 3 &4). At CSS we offer all levels but the last 2 years (currently) are taken in conjunction with IFT London. We teach an IFT satellite course in Wales, which is a Masters equivalent, as there is no university partnership. This course is UKCP accredited.

Each level, of the four year training route, builds on the one before. Our Foundation and Intermediate levels are AFT accredited and entry for each year is independent of the other years. So students need to apply at each stage and can exit at each stage. Though only the full four years leads to the potential for registration.
